URSULA MARIA

URSULA MARIA

I love catching up with people I haven’t seen in a while and to hear what they’ve been up to. I recently ran into Ursula Maria again, an actress and dancer I had met a few years ago when she had just come to LA. We both had time to grab a coffee and ended up talking for quite a while.
Ursula, it turned out, was just coming from an audition for a TV series. They were looking for an actress that is fluent in both English and German for this part. She said it was a lot of fun to read for this role but also a bit tricky to switch from German to English and back all the time. I can imagine that. When I asked her if she thinks that she got it, she said that you really never know and that she is happy when she feels like she has done a great job at the audition. She is also aware that there are so many things that you have no control over. So it’s best to focus on those things that you can control.
When I asked her what some of those things are she immediately replied: preparation! Knowing as much as possible about the project, the script and the character and working on it as much as time permits. And there are also obvious things like being on time, always keeping a headshot with you and dressing appropriately.
It sounded like a lot of work to me as there is so much competition out there that many times you will be preparing a lot for an audition and then end up not booking it. Ursula agreed with me but she also said that even if you weren’t right for that part, and they went with someone else, they still often remember you if you had a great audition and they may bring you back in for a different project. Every audition is also a learning experience and you get better at it. You just need to have fun with it. At the end of the day, it’s just another opportunity to play a new character, which is what Ursula likes a lot about acting. She loves the excitement of fully becoming someone else for just a while. Do all actors have this much fun, I wondered? At least I know one immensely talented actress who is having a terrific time at it.
Ursula then told me about her latest projects. She has played roles in a few short films that are currently being edited and in a feature film called Broken Angels that is also in post production. When I said I am excited to see them she was laughing and said so is she. So far, she has only seen a few select scenes. It’s always exciting to see how it all turned out in the end, she said. This month she is off to Chicago to shoot another short film, a thriller. It is called Loop and has something to do with our obsession with fame. I am intrigued, to say the least.
